Back at the station, Kira looked down at the flashing signal on her master control panel and called over to O’Brien. “Odo’s reached the transport site.”

“Trying to lock on,” O’Brien said, with more than a tinge of frustration. If Odo didn’t make his exit without being detected, the entire operation would be in jeopardy. But the damnable Cardie technology refused to cooperate. O’Brien pressed the control that should have activated the transporter immediately—at least it would have on the Enterprise.

Nothing happened.

“I’ve never done this with a Cardassian transporter,” he said, by way of explanation and apology. The major said nothing, merely scowled at him. O’Brien looked back down at his station with renewed aggravation and cursed the Cardie race silently but resoundingly—not for their atrocities but for their slipshod technology; he hated not being able to do his job properly. Swiftly he pressed another control to initiate an emergency backup sequence.

Nothing.

He put the damned thing on manual and tried to program the sequence in himself.

Nothing.

“Dammit!” O’Brien gave the panel a swift, solid kick. “What’s the prob—”

The beam activated; the pad began to shimmer. O’Brien looked down at his foot, then at the panel, marveling at the connection. By the time he looked back up at the pad, Odo had fully materialized.

Major Kira grinned at the shapeshifter. “Nice work, Constable.”
